It's official: The Comeback is coming back to HBO.

HBO announced Monday that the critical darling starring Friends alum Lisa Kudrow will be back for a six-episode season in the fall.

Following weeks of speculation, the comedy starring Emmy winner Kudrow as embattled and fading TV "it girl" Valerie Cherish, will pick up with the character who thinks she has it all figured out this time. The series originally ran for one 13-episode season on the premium cable network in 2005.

"The Comeback holds a special place in the hearts of its many fans, including many of us here at HBO,” HBO programming president Michael Lombardo said. “I can’t wait to find out what Valerie’s been up to since we last met.”

Created by Kudrow and Michael Patrick King (Sex and the City2 Broke Girls), production on the second season will begin this month in Los Angeles for a fall debut. King, Kudrow and her producing partner, Dan Bucatinsky, will all return as exec producers.

Season two will be written by King, Kudrow, Amy B. Harris (The Carrie Diaries, Sex and the City) and John Riggi. Kudrow, Lance Barber, Bucatinsky, Robert Michael Morris, Laura Silverman and Damian Young will co-star.

For HBO, The Comeback joins a comedy slate that includes Girls, Getting On, Looking, Silicon Valley, Veep and upcoming half-hours Togetherness and Ballers

For Kudrow -- who received multiple pilot offers this season after her multiple-episode arc alongside Bucatinsky on ABC's Scandal -- the return of The Comeback will give her shows on both HBO and Showtime. The latter renewed Web Therapy -- which hails from Kudrow and Bucatinsky's Is or Isn't Entertainment -- for a fourth season set to also air this year. The banner also exec produces TLC's docuseries Who Do You Think You Are, giving it three shows on the air this year.
