Comic-Con 2011: 'Vampire Diaries' Cast, Executive Producers Debate Elena's Love Life
Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder and Paul Wesley were on hand Saturday to tout the third season return of the CW drama.
The CW's The Vampire Diaries made a statement on Saturday in Ballroom 20.
After a sizzle reel highlighting the series up to this point (with a scene tacked on at the very end between Elena and a naked Damon) to tie viewers over until the third season premiere Thursday, Sept. 15 at 8 p.m., executive producers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec joined cast members Nina Dobrev, Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, Joseph Morgan and Candice Accola to share what's coming up next on the CW series.

"It's OK to love both of them," Wiliamson says of Elena's dilemma between choosing Damon and Stefan. "Katherine seems to know more about caring about both Salvatore brothers," Plec added. "Katherine had it right, you know what I mean?," Dobrev teased during the session when asked to pick either Damon or Stefan.
"Clearly they all have feelings for her other: family, friends, lovers," Williamson said of the love triangle between Elena-Damon-Stefan.

When asked whether they could feel the difference when Dobrev plays Katherine and Elena, Somerhalder says, "It's this weird little twinkle in her eye. She gets slightly sadistic" as Katherine. "Usually the wardrobe will give it away," Wesley says, adding that Elena usually wears sweatshirts while Katherine may wear more leather one-pieces.
Plec joked that the cast members have been pitching episodes set in international territories, like Paris, Hawaii, the Carribean and Jamaica when asked where Katherine went at the end of last season.
"I'd like to play Damon because of all the attention he's getting," Morgan joked when asked which character on the show he'd most like to play, teasing that Season 3 will reveal why Klaus and Stefan are going on their killing spree. "We're going to find more about his motives [for wanting Stefan] and his darker side," Morgan shared.
In a fantastical world, Dobrev revealed that she'd want the chance to play Klaus: "it would be fun to be a wampire." Somerhalder spoke for both he and Wesley when he said, "We would both want to be Klaus. ... Damon always thought he was the biggest badass around and then this idiot shows up."
"Stunt casting is not something we excel at. I like to write characters and find the right actors for the role," Williamson said of who they'd like to see on the drama, adding that "casting a star doesn't interest me." (Dobrev shared that Justin Bieber wanted to appear on the CW drama.)
"It's not just a supernatural ... consequence, it's an emotional consequence," Plec says of Jeremy's visions of his two former loves Vicki and Anna. "The first thing that happens is that he gets visitaitons from his first and second loves. Not only are we going to be able to tell a ghost story out of all this but also a romantic story as well.
"Damon's kind of not too happy bout the way his life has turned out this season." said Somehalder of where Damon stands at the beginning of Season 3.
"The Ripper Stefan thing is very interesting," Wesley said. "Hopefully we get to do that flashback" and see who he was.
What about seeing more Elijah in the third season? Plec would only say this: There is no joy in the world without Daniel Gilles.
