Comic-Con 2011: 'Warehouse 13's' Eddie McClintock (Q&A)

With hundreds of thousands of people attending San Diego Comic-Con every year and the July 20-24 event quickly approaching, The Hollywood Reporter chatted with the big names in television to discuss their favorite memories and tips for attending the annual event. The Hollywood Reporter: What was your first Comic-Con experience like?

Eddie McClintock: The first year we went, no one knew about the show so our first panel, there were maybe several hundred people there and even then it was pretty exciting. Last year, the Eureka and Warehouse panels were one right after the other so it had tripled in size. I like having the interaction with the fans, even though Comic-Con is more of an industry-driven convention. They know every line from every Star Trek movie or even Warehouse 13; we’ve got some pretty hardcore fans.

THR: Anything specific that sticks out in your mind?

McClintock: One of the restaurants there in downtown, they convert into the Syfy [headquarters]. If you went to eat at that restaurant, some of the menu items were named after the some of the characters and they had life-size cutouts. My cutout was right at the cash register.

THR: Has anyone said anything to you that you remember fondly?

McClintock: When I was growing up as a kid, and the things that my dad and I still share to this day: our love for movies and television shows and quoting different lines. Some guy said, “My son and I watch the show and we like to quote Pete’s lines.” It made an indelible impression on me.

THR: What’s the key to do having a good panel?

McClintock: You know, I’ve been thinking about it. Last year, when they called my name to go up on the dais for the panel, I showed up in the crowd and went through the crowd and got them psyched up for it. Streaking is on the list, so I’m going to streak.

THR: If you stood in line for a panel all day, which would it be?

McClintock: Warehouse 13, come on! I guess it would be Star Wars if they got all the Star Wars people together. It’d be a long line.

THR: What would your dream panel consist of?

McClintock: It would be Leonard Nimoy, Kate Mulgrew, Kurt Russell and Carrot Top, because he’s funny and he’s got a lot of props.

THR: Questions not to ask at panels?

McClintock: Do you do your own stunts or how old are you?

THR: Dos and don’ts for Comic-Con virgins?

McClintock: Let your freak flag fly. If you feel like dressing up like Chewbacca in a tutu, go for it. It’s a place to see and be seen. Definitely don’t miss the Warehouse 13 panel because you might see Eddie McClintock streak.

THR: If would you dress up as in costume and why?

McClintock: The character from John Carpenter’s The Thing. I would be a slob, which would be easy for me because all I’d have to do is eat ice-cream for a couple of weeks and not shave.

THR: What should viewers be expecting when Warehouse 13 returns?

McClintock: Last year, I think the writers would admit, we had a lot of stories that struggled – just short of calling them clunkers. This year, I don’t think we have any clunkers. [Guest stars] Lindsay Wagner, Renee Auberjonois, Kate Mulgrew, Jeri Ryan and Sasha Roiz.

THR: What are your thoughts on the potential Warehouse 13 spinoff?

McClintock: I think it’s a great idea. Jaime Murray makes a great H.G. Wells and I think it does nothing but help the show.
