Comic-Con 2012: Joss Whedon's 'Dr. Horrible' to Air on the CW
UPDATED: The three-part web series starring Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion and Felicia Day will air Oct. 9 at 9 p.m.
Captain Hammer is heading to the CW.
Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, the three-part web series created by geek god Joss Whedon, will air on the youth-skewing network, the Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator announced Friday during a panel celebrating his Dark Horse comic series at Comic-Con.
UPDATE July 30: The CW announced today that Dr. Horrible will air Tuesday, Oct. 9 from 9-10 p.m.
The musical starring Neil Patrick Harris (How I Met Your Mother), Castle's Nathan Fillion and web superstar Felicia Day (The Guild) will air at a date to be determined in the fall, a network representative confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter.
The story of an evil villain who really isn't evil at all was written by Whedon, his brothers Jed and Zack as well as Maurissa Tancharoen and released online in three parts via iTunes in 2008. Whedon and company created Dr. Horrible during the writers strike as a way to avoid the studio system and use the time during its 100-day run. Fillion co-starred as Captain Hammer, the most vain super hero in the world and Day played both Hammer and Dr. Horrible's love interest.
Whedon and company produced the series themselves, handling production, distribution and marketing and debuted the 45-minute effort at Comic-Con to an overwhelming response from Buffyverse fans. The series continues to be a Comic-Con staple with live sing-alongs continuing to take place every year at Comic-Con since the series' debut.
Dr. Horrible won a Creative Arts Emmy in 2009 for outstanding special class shortform program.
