How Cory Monteith Fans Can Pay Tribute to the 'Glee' Star
The actor was found dead on Saturday in a Vancouver hotel.
Glee fans wishing to pay tribute to Cory Monteith can donate to the Project Limelight Society, an organization that the late actor played a role in launching.
Monteith helped Maureen Webb, one of his early acting mentors, start up the nonprofit aid organization -- which offers free performing arts programs for children from Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside -- last year.
On Thursday night, the actor had dinner at Vancouver’s East of Main Café with Webb, who herself was instrumental in launching Monteith's acting career. It was Webb who suggested that a then 19-year-old Monteith, whom she met through a mutual friend, pursue acting.
In a promotional video for the launch of Project Limelight, Monteith admitted that as a teen he struggled to find a purpose in life.
“I was fortunate to have the arts inspired me,” he says in the video. “If it weren’t for the teachers and actors who showed me, I would have never gotten into acting. I’d never have been able to find my way. I kind of wish this was around when I was a kid.”
Monteith's reps said Sunday that donations can be made in his honor at Project Limelight's website (www.projectlimelightsociety.org) or via email at Project Limelight Society, 225 E. Georgia Street, Vancouver, B.C., V6A 1Z6.
Monteith was found dead on Saturday at Vancouver's Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel. He was 31.
The actor, who had been dating his Glee co-star Lea Michele at the time of his death, had checked into the hotel on July 6 and was expected to check out Saturday, police said. But when he missed his noon checkout time, hotel staff went to his room and discovered his body.
An autopsy has been scheduled for Monday.
Over the weekend, Michele's rep issued a statement asking for her privacy, while his friends held an impromptu wake at his Hollywood Hills home on Sunday, and other co-stars took to Twitter to express their shock and sadness over Monteith's death. Matthew Morrison performed a song in Monteith's honor on Sunday at a concert in Manhattan.
Glee has been renewed through season six, with speculation that it will be final season. It's unclear what will happen to Monteith's character, Finn, who was last seen returning to the New Directions choir room to be a co-coach of the glee club as he continued to pursue teaching at a college in Ohio.
