'Daily Show' Compares Newt Gingrich to 'Office' Oddball Dwight Schrute (Video)
Newt Gingrich's messy personal life is providing comic fuel for The Daily Show.
During Thursday's episode on Comedy Central, Jon Stewart and correspondent Jon Oliver took aim at Gingrich's marital history -- now back in the news in a big way following Nightline's controversial interview with Marianne Gingrich -- noting the resemblance between the so-called "Freaker of the House" and Dwight Schrute, the eccentric salesman portrayed by Rainn Wilson on NBC's The Office.
Another Gingrich lookalike, according to The Daily Show: the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man from the first Ghostbusters movie.
"This emotionally and physically repugnant man, who on his best day, places in a Dwight Schrute lookalike contest -- and who, on his worst day, rampages through the city of New York -- has somehow, somehow Jon, like a Judo master -- channeled his weaknesses into strengths. And has been cutting a f--king path through America that Warren Beatty would find daunting," said Oliver.
In her Nightline sitdown, Gingrich's jilted second wife (that would be Marianne) claimed he requested an open marriage so that he could have a mistress, Callista Bisek, who's now his third wife. She refused, and several months after her diagnosis of Multiple sclerosis, the former House speaker asked for a divorce. (He did the same with his first wife, Jackie, while she was undergoing cancer treatment.)
"What could be more traditional than the arrangement that Gingrich proposed? Throughout history, traditional marriage has meant powerful men doing whatever the f--k they want, whenver the f--k they want to!" joked Oliver.
