'Dancing With the Stars'' Carson Kressley, Anna Trebunskaya Name Their Biggest Competition
The professional dancer tells THR how a same-sex couple would stack up in the competition, and what viewers can expect from her partner's wardrobe choices.
As a new crop of contenders prepare to face off in the ballroom for the very first time, Dancing With the Stars pro Anna Trebunskaya spoke with The Hollywood Reporter about how she thinks partner Carson Kressley will fare in the competition.
"He's an enthusiastic dancer, but he definitely has to learn a lot," she told THR. "He's a sweet guy and I know he's going to put on a great show."
Kressley may need guidance when it comes to the dance floor, but he's a pro when it comes to fashion. As an expert who made a name for himself on Bravo's Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, Kressley has been active in conceptualizing ideas behind the couple's flashy costumes.
"He's definitely been involved. He's been giving ideas to our dress designer on the show," Trebunskaya said. "He and I were kind of talking about the concept -- what our dance is about, what we want the feel to be -- and I think we came up with a pretty cool outfit. He wanted to be more classy, like Fred Astaire, but a little bit more modern, versus Ricky Ricardo."
"I just hope that we stay in the competition long enough to see all his outfit ideas!" she added with a laugh.
Kressley follows in the footsteps of Season 7's Lance Bass as an openly gay male partnered with a female on the dance floor. As producers have opted to continue with tradition, many fans have wondered when and if the series will include a same sex couple in their lineup.
"I feel that its possible, of course. But I think you'd be at a disadvantage," Trebunskaya explained. "Because ballroom has centuries of tradition, everything is created for a male and female body. You know like lifts and stuff, it would be harder for two guys. One to lift another or for two girls to be together, it would be hard to do the lifts. There are just some things that only girls bodies can do and only some things that guys bodies can do."
As for whether producers would consider the option in the future, she noted, "Well our show has been sort of creative with the cast and very successful, so we'll see. I don't know."
Fans can see Kressley's moves when Season 13 debuts on ABC Monday, Sept. 19 at 9 p.m. He will face off against the likes of Rob Kardashian, Chaz Bono, Nancy Grace, Ron Artest, Kristin Cavillari and more. So, who is he most nervous about?
"Carson is worried about Ricki Lake being the Broadway star, she was in Hairspray," Trebunskaya admitted. "I think Hope Solo is going to do wonderful because she is a really fit, gorgeous, strong woman that just came off her World Cup. But its really going to be anybody's game and we'll see. The first show will really prove who can do what."
