Fox has tapped a familiar face to star in its reboot of Broadchurch.

Star David Tennant, who plays Alec Hardy in the BBC America series, will reprise the role in Fox's event series remake, the network announced Wednesday.

STORY: Fox Adapting U.K. Drama 'Broadchurch' as Event Series

Series creator Chris Chibnall (Dr. Who, Camelot) will executive produce the new incarnation, with production beginning in January for a debut during the 2014-15 season.

Set in an American town, Fox's Broadchurch (working title) follows the tragic and mysterious death of a young boy found dead on an idyllic beach surrounded by rocks and a jutting cliff face from where he might have fallen. Although the cause of his death remains unsolved, the picturesque seaside town where the tragedy occurred is at the heart of a major police investigation and a nationwide media frenzy.

Chibnall will pen the premiere episode and executive produce the series with Shine America's Carolyn Bernstein (The Bridge) and Jane Featherstone (The Hour, MI-5) from drama producers Kudos. The series will be distributed by Shine International. Additionally, Dan Futterman (Capote, In Treatment) and Anya Epstein (In Treatment, Homicide) have signed on to executive produce and to serve as showrunners on the Fox series.

STORY: The 'Bible' Effect and the Resurrection of TV Miniseries

For Tennant, the move to reprise the role comes a week to the day after the original drama ended its freshman run on BBC America.

Tennant is repped by UTA and the U.K.'s Independent Talent; Futterman and Epstein are also with UTA.
