The pickup comes days before the half-hour series returns for the remainder of its 21-episode freshman season on Jan. 17 at 7:30 p.m. Since its debut, Liv and Maddie has made a splash in the younger demographics, specifically among kids 2-11 (2.1 million), kids 6-11 (1.7 million) and tweens 9-14 (1.6 million), and averages roughly 3.4 million viewers.

"Liv and Maddie has quickly become a Disney Channel fan favorite and our viewers have connected with Dove Cameron in her dual role, as well as the rest of the Rooney family," said Adam Bonnett, executive vp original programming. "Season two will continue to make families laugh with relatable and engaging stories."

The series centers on 16-year-old identical twins, Liv and Maddie (both played by Cameron), as they experience the highs and lows of high school, bothersome brothers and each other's differences. In addition to Cameron, Joey Bragg, Tenzing Norgay Trainor, Kali Rocha and Benjamin King also star.

Creators John Beck and Ron Hart serve as executive producers, along with director Andy Fickman, Betsy Sullenger and John Peaslee.

The renewal ensures that the 17-year-old Cameron, who also stars in the network's upcoming original movies Descendants and Cloud 9, remains firmly ingrained in the Disney Channel family. Other original series on the network's slate include Jessie, Austin & Ally, A.N.T. Farm and Dog With a Blog, with the upcoming Girl Meets World and I Didn't Do It debuting later this year.
