E! Upfront: 'Soup' Spinoff; Josh Schwartz, Kevin Spacey Scripted Entries, More
In addition to eight scripted dramas, the NBCUniversal-owned cable network unveiled six new unscripted shows and 10 specials with subjects ranging from Ross Mathews to 50 Cent.
A year after unveiling a scripted slate with a vow to have at least two projects on the air by 2013, E! is going back to the well.
The NBCUniversal-owned cable network, ahead of its upfront presentation to Madison Avenue on Monday, announced it is developing eight scripted dramas as well as nine nonscripted offerings on top of ordering six new series.
On the scripted side, E! -- under new programming chief Jeff Olde -- is looking to established creators including Gossip Girl's Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage's Fake Empire, Ryan Seacrest, Smash's Craig Zadan and Neil Meron, Oscar winner Ron Bass (Rain Man), Kevin Spacey, Gale Anne Hurd (The Walking Dead)and Mark Schwahn (One Tree Hill) as it attempts to become the latest cabler to enter the scripted arena.
Scripted dramas in development range from family soaps (Laurel Canyon, The Shoreline) and a biopic based on the life of prolific songwriter Diane Warren that was previously in development at NBC; to retellings of The Prince & the Pauper from Seacrest, Bass' take on Charles Dickens' Great Expectations and Schwahn's Hamlet update, among others. The current plan is to have three scripted efforts greenlighted by Memorial Day.
The lineup comes more than two years after the network best known for its Kardashian franchise first vowed to expand into scripted programming. Following a months-long search, E! tapped ABC's Kevin Plunkett senior vp scripted programming. "The goal is to do to E! what we did to USA over the past seven years: take it from a successful channel and have it just completely break out," NBCU Cable Entertainment Group head Bonnie Hammer told THR in June 2011. "Obviously we do a boatload [of scripted programming] at USA and Syfy, and E! is the next step."
In addition, E! will grow its nonscripted fare with the addition of six new series including the previously announced boy band docuseries The Wanted Life. Joining recently launched What Would Ryan Lochte Do? and Married to Jonas are Total Divas, a look at the women of the WWE; another sports-themed entry with Love and Other Contact Sports: Eric and Jesse; pop culture series Hello Ross, The Trend and Pop Innovators. There are nine half-hour offerings, too, including a spinoff to the fan favorite clip show The Soup. After re-upping at E!'s weekly pop culture juggernaut in September, Joel McHale will host The Soup Investigates, which responds to the questions pop culture fans never thought to ask and then some.
Already home to the Kardashians, E! will continue to mine for colorful families with docuseries focusing on the elite in Sonoma Valley's wine country; female poker players; Miami real estate agents and more. The cabler will also enter the game show arena with a photography competition effort and an adaptation of the classic parlor game three truths and a lie as well as a sketch comedy effort starring James Davis and a comedic look at dancing from exec producer Jack Osbourne.
What's more, E! will continue to team with a who's who of reality show staples for 10 specials featuring the likes of Nick Cannon, Melissa Rycroft, Holly Madison, Jason Derulo, The Wanted, Brooke Burke as well as an hour with 50 Cent and a talk show from EP Ashley Tisdale.
"With its tremendous reach and influence, E! delivers original programming that achieves our network's mission to inspire and entertain the pop culture fan in all of us," E! president Suzanne Kolb said. "We are continuing to build on the success of our signature programming with new projects featuring a diverse mix of genres, formats and points of view that are centered in pop culture and are sure to excite our fans."
