Emmys: On the Set of ABC's 'How to Get Away With Murder' (Photos)
It's a sunny day in late January and while ABC is marketing freshman drama How to Get Away With Murder's midseason return, the cast and crew are hard at work shooting the season finale.
The fast-paced, high-stakes drama from creator Pete Nowalk became a breakout hit last fall when the Shonda Rhimes-produced drama premiered to a whopping 14 million total viewers and a 3.8 among adults 18-49. Millions of viewers followed every twist and turn in the 15-episode season as the events of Murder Night continued at a breakneck pace, with jaw-dropping moments such as these unforgettable nine words: "Why is your penis on a dead girl's phone?"
On the show's Hollywood set, changes come as fast and furious as the pace of the show — but the rapid-fire dialogue isn't something that phases star Viola Davis.
"I try to just play the truth of the scene and the moment," Davis tells THR. "I try not to think about pace in terms of style because it transports me out of the scene and into something very technical and I simply can't work that way."
Off-screen, Murder — like its lead-in, Scandal — has helped TV become more representative of society, as primetime has embraced diversity.
"I feel like we are on the cusp of the 21st century — we have to change. We have to understand that we are, indeed, as people of color, part of the narrative," Davis says. "And that just like you tell stories for anyone Caucasian, you also have to tell our story."
