'Eureka's' Erica Cerra Talks Cancelation and Relief Over Syfy's Additional Episode Order
The actress has been through a roller coaster of emotions, but she's also looking forward to what's next.
Eureka fans were both confused and angered after Syfy reversed its recent decision to extend the show for a six-episode sixth season – effectively canceling it. Erica Cerra, who plays Jo, the town’s intense deputy sheriff, on the series, was naturally taken aback by the news.
“I read a few tweets made by Salli [Richardson-Whitfield] and Colin [Ferguson] about ‘hearing the news’ so, I did what any woman would do. I was nosy and asked ‘what news?’” Cerra tells The Hollywood Reporter about how she heard about the cancelation.
“But, thankfully before I received a response,” she continues. “[Executive producers] Jaime Paglia, Todd Sharp and [producer] Bruce Miller called and told me what happened.”
When the cancelation was announced, the cast was set to shoot the Season 5 finale in just days and they worried that the series wouldn’t get an appropriate ending. Just a day later, Syfy announced it was giving the series one more episode to wrap itself up.
Cerra took some time out from her shooting schedule to give THR and the show’s fans some clarity on the network's decisions and what she’s looking forward to as the series wraps its final episodes.
The Hollywood Reporter: What was the general feel and reaction on-set after the news broke?
Erica Cerra: Definite shock, and then of course sadness sank in.
THR: What insight can you give fans on why Syfy pulled the final six-episode season order?
Cerra: Unfortunately, I think it was a financial decision, although I can't be sure. We have not heard anything definite.
THR: How do you feel about the additional episode order?
Cerra: I'm thrilled Syfy is going to give its very loyal audience an ending they deserve. These characters have become a part of our fan's families, and they have the right to know what the future holds for them. I am excited to give them a great ending to a fantastic run on this great show.
THR: How would you like the series and your character to end?
Cerra: For the series, I have no idea! I cannot even imagine what they might write. As for Jo, I think I would love to see more of her domestic side. Married, with children -- three girls and one boy, of course -- living on acreage... enjoying a peaceful, non-violent or hectic life -- with gardening! Or maybe she willfinally become sheriff. Zane (Niall Matter) and Jo will stay together and they will live happily ever after in "A Town Called Eureka."
THR: What would you like do once Eureka wraps? Any roles you’re dying to do or upcoming projects?
Cerra: What would I like to do after Eureka wraps... There are so many things I want to do, so many places I want my career to go. I have learned so much being on Eureka, I have grown as an actress, as a person, and I feel prepared to tackle whatever my next role is in full force. As of right now, I am available for work! I would love to be on another show, however there are a few big film projects I have been going out for. I have had my taste in film as well in the past, they are different experiences -- TV and Film -- and I love them both. I want to do some comedy, I want to do action -- I am ready for whatever is thrown my way, next!
Eureka is currently airing the second half of its fourth season Mondays at 8 p.m. on Syfy. Season 5 will begin airing next year.
