'Fashion Star': NBC Attempts to Reinvent the Reality Fashion Show Competition (Video)
The show, hosted by Elle Macpherson, and starring mentors Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos, premieres Tuesday, March 15.
In an effort to reinvent the fashion design reality competition genre the way The Voice has brought a fresh take on the singing reality competition, NBC is trying a new look on with Fashion Star, which premieres Tuesday, March 13.
While the show begins with the same structure of 14 amateur designers with big hopes and bigger personalities, it adds a twist by focusing on the business aspect of building a brand and allowing viewers to purchase the winning items each week the very next day.

Each week, the contestants will be given a themed assignment to make one look for the runway. They’ll be helped along the way by three mentors: Jessica Simpson, Nicole Richie and John Varvatos. Then, their looks will be judged by three buyers from Macy’s, H&M and Saks Fifth Avenue. The buyers will bid on the looks they like, and pass on the ones they don’t. The claimed clothes will become available in stores the day after the episode airs, so viewers can immediately bring them home.
Any designer whose look isn’t bought is up for elimination. The judges will have the ability to save one designer each week.
The final designer left standing will receive the grand prize of $6 million in orders for capsule collections in Macy's, H&M and Saks Fifth Avenue stores.

Fashion Star premieres on Tuesday, March 13, at 9:30 PT/ET on NBC.
