Fox Orders Andy Richter Game Show Pilot (Exclusive)
"Step Up" hails from Endemol USA and comes a week after NBC ordered family game show "Wall of Fame" from the company.
Endemol is stepping up its unscripted fare.
Less than a week after NBC gave a straight-to-series order for Wall of Fame, the production company has landed a pilot order at Fox for game show Step Up, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.
Step Up, which will be hosted by comedian and actor Andy Richter (Conan), offers contestants "life-changing" amounts of money if they can successfully climb a pyramid, with greater rewards coming with bigger risks as they approach the top. Players will be faced with the decision to climb higher -- to "step up" -- or take their cash and go home.
Endemol USA (Wipeout, 1 vs. 100, Steve Harvey) has a successful track record for producing game shows. The company previously developed Deal or No Deal, based on the international format that aired in more than 50 countries, which was on NBC for four seasons, consistently ranking as one of its highest-rated shows.
"In addition to our diverse slate of programming, Endemol USA has put a significant amount of effort into developing the next hit game show," Endemol North America chairman and CEO David Goldberg said. "This is the second primetime game show we will produce this year. Step Up is everything you hope for in a game show. It's a clean and straightforward premise, filled with high stakes and drama, played on a spectacular stage."
Step Up comes three years after Richter was near a deal to host a revival celebrity trivia series Pyramid at CBS and later TBS. Goldberg called the Conan personality a funny and bright comedian who is "genuine, relatable and possesses real stage presence."
"We are very lucky to have him," he said.
For Fox, the project comes as the network continues to invest in unscripted fare, including recently completed workplace competition series Does Someone Have to Go? and five series from Gordon Ramsay.
Richter is repped by CAA, Brillstein Entertainment and Rohner Walerstein.
