Fox Announces 'Short-Com Comedy Hour' for Summer 2013
The hourlong showcase could serve as a new development tool for the network.
Fox is continuing to ramp up its comedy slate by ordering new series The Short-Com Comedy Hour to launch in summer 2013.
The Short-Com Comedy Hour will showcase four short-form sitcoms, which the network is calling "short-coms," in one hourlong episode. Both up-and-comers and established talent will be featured in the one-act scenes.
Fox hopes that the summer series will also act as a new form of development for future multi-camera shows, saying that the best vignettes will be given series orders.
“We are basically ripping open the traditional scripted comedy development process with The Short-Com Comedy Hour,” said Kevin Reilly, president of entertainment at Fox. “Our end goal is to provide distinct comedy voices with a world-class platform to experiment, grow and perfect their ideas and to hopefully build them into mainstream comedy hits in the future. We’re looking forward to seeing what the untapped comedy community has to offer.”
The news comes months after Fox announced a late-night Saturday night animation block, Animation Domination HD, to launch each season and it readies the debuts of new comedies Ben and Kate and The Mindy Project. Fox is also eyeing a multi-camera comedy effort from former Community boss Dan Harmon.
Additional details for The Short-Com Comedy Hour will be announced at a later date.
