Fringe's Kirk Acevedo is heading to Syfy.

The actor has boarded the NBCUniversal-owned cable network's 12 Monkeys drama pilot, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Based on Terry Gilliam's feature film of the same name that starred Bruce Willis and Brad Pitt, the drama centers on a time traveler from the postapocalyptic future who appears in the present day on a mission to locate and eradicate the source of a deadly plague that will eventually decimate the human race.

STORY: Syfy's '12 Monkeys' Sets Stars, Showrunner

Acevedo, who is currently recurring on AMC's The Walking Dead, will play Ramse, Cole's (Nikita's Aaron Stanford) closest friend in the apocalyptic future. He's clever and fiercely loyal and helped Cole survive the destruction of civilization. While Cole travels through time, Ramse proves critical to the survival of the team that makes it possible.

He joins a cast that also includes Suits alum Amanda Schull and Nikita's Noah Bean and guest star Zeljko Ivanek.

Acevedo, who won an Alma Award for The Thin Red Line and earned nominations for his role in Oz, most recently starred on Fringe and Prime Suspect. Repped by Medavoy Management, his credits also include Band of Brothers and episodes of Blue Bloods and Person of Interest.

In Plain Sight's Natalie Chaidez will serve as showrunner on the drama from feature film producers Charles Roven and Richard Suckle of Atlas Entertainment -- one of the production companies on the 1995 Universal film. Terry Matalas (Nikita, Terra Nova, Star Trek: Enterprise) and Travis Fickett (Nikita, Terra Nova) will pen the script for the Universal Cable Productions venture.
