Gale Anne Hurd's 'Hunters' Gets Syfy Series Order

Based on Whitley Strieber's novel 'Alien Hunters'

Syfy is moving forward with its Gale Anne Hurd drama Hunters.

The NBCUniversal-owned cable network announced Tuesday that has handed out a 13-episode series order to the drama based on Whitley Strieber's best-selling novel Alien Hunter. The drama will premiere on Syfy in 2016.

First put in development nearly a year ago, the drama hails from Walking Dead EP Hurd and Universal Cable Productions, where the prolific producer's Valhalla Productions is under an overall deal. The drama was picked up straight to series after a year in development. Casting has not yet been announced.

The series follows a Pennsylvania detective-turned-suspect Flynn Carroll who, after his wife mysteriously goes missing, is determined to prove his innocence and find her. His search leads to evidence that dangerous alien cells are living among us, and the U.S. government has a secret organization in place to thwart their terrorist efforts.

Heroes and alum Natalie Chaidez will pen the script and executive produce alongside Hurd via the prolific producer's Universal Cable Productions-based Valhalla Entertainment banner.

Hunters arrives as Syfy is making a concerted push to focus more on sci-fi fare a la BattlestarGalactica. The cable network has a huge roster of similarly themed fare set as part of the move including Dominion, 12 Monkeys, Olympus, Z Nation, The Expanse and minis Childhood's End and Ascension. The series joins a roster of original scripted fare including Continuum, Defiance, Haven, Helix and Lost Girl, among others.
