'Girls': Chris O'Dowd Defends Controversial Adam Driver Episode
The guest star briefly married to Jemima Kirke's character says he "probably" would have filmed the scene himself in deference to Lena Dunham.
The shock of Sunday night's Girls episode has yet to sink in for many fans of the Lena Dunham-created series who have turned against Adam Driver's character, as well as Dunham and HBO for arguably ambushing viewers with that dark, explicit scene involving Shiri Appleby.
Although he hadn't seen the "On All Fours" episode, Chris O'Dowd -- known on Girls as venture capitalist Thomas-John, whose marriage to Jessa (Jemima Kirke) goes off the rails in season two -- is defending Dunham's provocative writing.
"What I love about that show is that it's honest. If sh-t happens, why not shoot it? That's why they call it shooting the sh-t," O'Dowd told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday at the New York premiere of The Sapphires, a '60s-set dramedy starring the actor as a talent scout who discovers a Supremes-like girl group.

When asked if he would have agreed to shoot Driver's scene, O'Dowd said: "Probably, yeah." No word on whether the actor. whose breakout role arrived in 2011 playing Kristen Wiig's love interest in Bridesmaids, will return for season three; Thomas-John ditched Jessa in an episode several weeks ago, calling their brief, dysfunctional union the worst mistake of his life.
The Sapphires begins its limited U.S. theater release on March 22, and the season finale of Girls airs Sunday at 9 p.m. on HBO.
