ABC Leads Nominees for GLAAD Media Awards
Showtime, Chaz Bono and "The Voice" also have strong showings in the awards recognizing outstanding images of the LGBT community.
Despite drawing the ire of the organization for its now-canceled cross-dressing comedy Work It, ABC topped the list of nominees for the 23rd annual GLAAD Media Awards.
Collecting mentions for Grey's Anatomy (outstanding drama) as well Modern Family and Happy Endings, the Disney-owned network also picked up a nomination for outstanding individual episode without a regular LGBT character for its short-lived comedy Man Up and reality staple Dancing With the Stars with Chaz Bono.
Bono also factored in a pair of other nominees: OWN's Becoming Chaz earned a nom in the documentary category and his turn on CBS' Late Show With David Letterman also was mentioned in the outstanding talk show field.
The nominations come a month after the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation encouraged the network not to air cross-dressing comedy Work It, claiming the series reinforced "false and damaging stereotypes about transgender people."
Grey's Anatomy, which featured a lesbian wedding last season, will compete with TeenNick's Degrassi, ABC Family's Pretty Little Liars, Showtime's Shameless and Starz's Torchwood: Miracle Day in the drama field.
Happy Endings and Modern Family, which took home the award with Fox's Glee last year, will again compete with the Fox musical in the comedy category where fellow nominees Logo's Exes and Ohs and Showtime's The Big C join them.
Showtime also picked up three nominations in the major categories, collecting mentions for best drama for Shameless (which features a now-openly gay teen) and outstanding reality program for its The L Word reality spinoff The Real L Word, in addition to The Big C.
NBC's first-year singing competition The Voice, which featured four openly gay contestants, also picked up a nomination in the reality program field, where it will compete with Oxygen's Glee reality spinoff The Glee Project, Sundance's Girls Who Like Boys Who Like Boys, ABC's Dancing and Real L Word.
On the film side, wide release nominees include Roadside Attractions' Albert Nobbs, Focus Features' Beginners and Warner Bros. Pictures' J. Edgar. Limited release nominees include Roadside's Circumstance, Motion Film Group's Gun Hill Road, Focus' Pariah, Rocket Releasing's Tomboy and Sundance Selects' Weekend.
The GLAAD Media Awards recognize outstanding images of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community. The 23rd annual awards will be held in New York on March 24, Los Angeles on April 21 and San Francisco on June 2. GLAAD on Thursday announced 116 nominees in 25 English-language categories and 35 Spanish-language nominees in 10 categories.
