The actress, who plays the surly-yet-sweet Coach Beiste, was traveling to Australia and was on a plane when the TV Academy announced nominations July 14.
“When the plane landed … I turned on my phone and I get this tweet from Max [Adler],” Jones said said last week backstage at Comic-Con.
Jones will go head-to-head with Glee’s Kristin Chenoweth and Gwyneth Paltrow as well as Raising Hope’s Cloris Leachman, Saturday Night Live’s Tina Fey and 30 Rock’s Elizabeth Banks at the Sept. 18 Emmys.

Jones first landed on the musical dramedy after running into Glee co-creator Brad Falchuk, with whom she worked on FX’s Nip/Tuck and the FX pilot Pretty/Handsome, at a grocery store.

“Two months later, I get a call from my agent,” Jones recalled. “They said that they were writing something, and I signed my contract not knowing who or what I was playing.”
