'Glee': Ryan Murphy Announces His Engagement, Spills on Season 3

Glee co-creator Ryan Murphy announced his engagement to his long-term boyfriend and dispelled rumors about the Fox musical hit during a chat Friday with KIIS-FM’s Ryan Seacrest.

“I’m with a great fellow now that I’ve known for 15 years and we just got engaged,” he said, without providing the identity of his partner. “We are very excited about it.”

Murphy, who will have six new writers joining the dramedy for the show’s upcoming third season, also dispelled rumors that “half the cast” will be replaced next year.

“There are a few rumors out floating around that half the cast is going to be replaced by the winner of [Oxygen reality series] The Glee Project, which is not true,” he said. “There’s one winner and that person is joining the cast. … This year, we’ll have a couple people who come in now and again in January.”

The winner of The Glee Project, which launched Sunday to underwhelming ratings, will join the flagship series for a seven-episode arc during Season 3, and Murphy said, will be part of the tour that will happen next year.

As for the status of such featured cast members as Lea Michele, Chris Colfer and Cory Monteith, Murphy noted that the series will be staying true to the high school timeline.

“I don’t think of it in terms of eliminating or replacing -- I don’t like that word,” he told Seacrest, noting that Matthew Morrison and Jane Lynch will always be the linchpins of the series. “We didn’t want to have a show where [the characters] were in high school for eight years. When we started out they were sophomores and last year they were juniors. This next year will be their senior year and then that group of kids will graduate.”

Murphy also noted his tendency to alternate between darker fare, like FX’s plastic surgery drama Nip/Tuck, and lighter fare like his former WB Network series Popular, and spoke of his FX pilot American Horror Story as if it had already been picked up to series.

“I like to do things that are optimistic and affirmative and then I like to go darker,” he said. “I have a new show coming on in the fall called American Horror Story, which is dark. It’s a big scary cool horror show that’s going to be on FX with Connie Britton and Jessica Lange and I’m really excited about it.”

Sources confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that American Horror Story had not yet been ordered to series.

Production for Season 3 of Glee gets under way in mid-August with the premiere scheduled for mid-September.
