The Gospel of Kevin has just landed a divine piece of casting.

The forthcoming ABC dramedy has cast Kimberly Hebert Gregory (Vice Principals) in a series-regular role, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The hourlong centers on Kevin Finn (Jason Ritter), a cluelessly self-serving person who is on a dangerous path to despair. In a downward spiral, Kevin returns home to stay with his widowed twin sister (JoAnna Garcia Swisher) and niece.  On his first night there, an unlikely celestial being named Yvette appears to him and presents him with a mission: to save the world.

Gregory will play Yvette, who serves as Kevin’s guide and teacher and is described as a drill sergeant with divine authority. Confident, fierce and no-nonsense, her job is to guide Kevin toward spiritual enlightenment. Her methods can be warm and loving or punishing and painful. If she’s an angel (and she never calls herself that), she’s the least angellike being Kevin has ever met.

Gregory replaces Cristela Alonzo, who originated the role in the pilot and appeared briefly in the first trailer for the series shown at ABC's upfront. On the same day The Gospel of Kevin earned a series pickup, Alonzo tweeted that her role was being recast.

Like Alonzo, Gregory also has history at ABC, where she starred opposite Toni Collette in Kenya Barris' pilot Unit Zero, which was not picked up to series.

In addition to her starring role on HBO's Vice Principals, which will wrap with its upcoming second season, Gregory's credits include Better Call Saul, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Grey's Anatomy. She is repped by Don Buchwald & Associates and Washington Square Films.

On The Gospel of Kevin, Gregory joins a cast that also includes J. August Richards, Chloe East, Dustin Ybarra and India de Beaufort. Paul McGuigan directed the pilot, which hails from creators and executive producers Michele Fazekas and Tara Butters (Marvel’s Agent Carter).

The Gospel of Kevin airs Tuesdays at 10 p.m. this fall on ABC. Click here to watch the trailer for the series and the rest of ABC's new offerings.
