'Gossip Girl' Season Finale: Kelly Rutherford on Lily's Future With Rufus, Bart's Return
Tonight's Gossip Girl season finale forces the Upper East Siders to make decisions that may affect the trajectory of the rest of their lives.
One of them, Blair's (Leighton Meester) ultimate decision between Dan (Penn Badgley) and Blair, has been teased all season long. Another loose end is a more recent development: What will Lily (Kelly Rutherford) do with the future of her union with Rufus (Matthew Settle), especially after their disagreement over Cece (Caroline Lagerfelt) and Ivy (Kaylee DeFer), and how does Bart's (Robert John Burke) reappearance affect it?
"She went through this tough thing with her mom [Cece] and [Rufus has] been siding with Ivy," Rutherford told The Hollywood Reporter. "Where is the trust? Where is the love? That's made her toughen up in the past few episodes. The guy she loves is not backing her in certain ways, so it's going to be interesting."
Bart's unexpected appearance may play a role in Lily's future, who may not exactly be 100 percent behind her ex-husband's "resurrection" of sorts. "In terms of her relationship with Bart, they left on an odd note," Rutherford says, "and to have him back is a big, big surprise. There are a lot of mixed emotions with that. I'm sure she's happy he's actually alive in some way, but there's this part that says, 'Where was I?' and was deceived by the whole thing."
The finale will see Lily and the rest of the Gossip Girl gang being forced to make life-altering decisions.
"People aren't going to believe it. They are going to be pretty excited about it and at the same time, be surprised," Rutherford previewed. "Depending on what you think the characters' choices are going to be, who knows if they are going to make that choice. It's exciting after this season to see where everyone is going to land. [Lily] is going to have to make a choice [with her marriage]."
Rutherford teased "some good scenes" play out in the finale between Rufus, Bart and Lily, noting that Bart's return greatly affects Chuck (Ed Westwick) and Lily's business partnership that they've since forged. "There's a lot going on with Charles (aka Chuck) and his dad being back and what decisions Lily is going to make in terms of that, where she stands with the whole business dynamic now," she says. "Does this mean Bart's going to come back and take over the whole business? Who is he going to side with and how?"
The season has been particularly rough on the Van Der Woodsens. When asked to reflect on the year that was, Rutherford offered this: "There are a lot of things that have brought the family together: Cece's passing. But it's also brought up where everyone's loyalty stands."
Gossip Girl airs its season finale Monday at 8 p.m. on The CW.
