'Grey's Anatomy': Should Cristina and Owen End Up Together?
[Warning: This story contains spoilers from Thursday's "Do You Know" episode of Grey's Anatomy.]
ABC's Grey's Anatomy offered not one but two glimpses into what Cristina (Sandra Oh) and Owen's (Kevin McKidd) future may look like during Thursday's "Sliding Doors"-style hour.
Inspired by a case in which a paralyzed man is given the choice to live or die, Cristina envisions her future in three different scenarios. In the first, Cristina -- who over 10 seasons has remained steadfast in her desire to not have children -- makes a sacrifice for Owen to remarry and start a family. The second sees Cris put career first, while the third leaves the future open for both of them as the long-running medical drama continues to ponder the beloved couple's future.
As the first option plays out, Cris winds up sacrificing her career to raise a family and see Owen happy as a clam while she's pregnant with her second child and completely miserable. Worse, she's presenting the Harper Avery Award to Shane, her former intern whom she let take the lead on her research. She's most focused on motherhood and winds up crying in the restroom at the ceremony with the realization that she should have been the one accepting the prize.
During the second option, Cristina holds her beliefs and stays with Owen. While both are extremely successful surgeons, he's completely miserable as her career continues to come before anything he wants, including children. They wind up at an impasse after Owen wants to move to Germany to rejoin Teddy as the head of the military's trauma unit. They fall back into the pattern of getting back together and breaking up after Owen realizes he wants more. Eventually, Owen cheats on her, and they break up for good. Cris wins four straight Harper Avery Awards, and Owen develops a drinking problem -- after he's unable to move on from Cristina. He winds up getting fired after endangering a patient's life when he repeatedly shows up drunk to work.
In the third option, Cristina is prevented from even going down the road to see what would happen if she professed her love for Owen -- as in the first two scenarios -- and leaving the future unclear for both of them.
All told, the "Sliding Doors" episode illustrated that no matter which path Cristina went down, someone is likely to get hurt. With Oh's exit inching closer this season, this episode offered a glimpse at the many options the Grey's Anatomy writers have likely been kicking around. As for how Cristina will actually make her exit, that's yet to be determined.
