'Happy Endings' Finale Postmortem: Elisha Cuthbert Forecasts the Coming Love Triangle

The ABC comedy threw a bit of a twist at the end of Wednesday's Season 2 closer, something the series star tells THR could go in many different directions in the third season.

After hinting at an Penny (Casey Wilson) and Dave (Zach Knighton) might get together throughout Happy Endings' second season, the series went in another direction at the end of Wednesday's finale, which seemed to have Dave and former fiancee Alex (Elisha Cuthbert) headed for a reconciliation.

Penny finally came to terms with her feelings for Dave and resolved to tell Alex first. Instead, she walked in on what looked like an intimate moment between Alex and Dave at Derrick's (Stephen Guarino) wedding. The miscommunication prompted Alex and Dave to question if something really was going on -- and sent Penny into the wheelchair of guest star Brian Austin Green.

The episode ended with a shot of Alex and Dave holding hands as Max's (Adam Pally) all-male Madonna cover band sang "Like a Prayer."

The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Cuthbert ahead of the finale, and she offered some insight into where the potential love triangle could go from here:

THR: Are you surprised the writers keep Alex and Dave on the burner so long after she left him at the altar?
Cuthbert: I kind of don't mind if it goes either way. I think there's a lot of great things to come out of us getting back together and being a couple, but part of me thinks they're so strong apart that they don't really need each other anymore. It's one of those things where you think I'd be like 'Dave and Alex should get back together,' or 'No They shouldn't,' but I feel like there's good stuff either way the writers choose to go with it.

STORY: 'Happy Endings' Showrunners 'Exploring' Penny and Dave Dynamic

THR: What do you think of it being left so open-ended?
Cuthbert: There was talk that we were going to get back together, so I was surprised it was still open for debate. But they brought back the Penny aspect, the triangle there. That's the point, though, to not be so stereotypical. I also remember  Zach and I talking about, 'Are they going to kiss again?' in that hotel room scene. But you saw that when we all drank the Kool-Aid and had sex dreams about Dave. We'd been there before, and I don't know if that would have been as big of a deal. We tried to find a way to do it where it was sweet. We'll see where it goes. I think it was tough to do when they brought Penny back into it.

THR: How do you think Alex would react to Penny having feelings for Dave?
Cuthbert: I don't know. I think it will depend on how it plays out between the two of them. Does Penny confront Alex first before attempting something? Or does it happen anyway without Alex knowing? That lends itself to two totally different reactions. A part of me thinks she'd be like, "Awesome, I love both of you!" But another part of me feels like if its dealt with the wrong way she'll be upset.
