'How to Get Away With Murder' Enlists Cicely Tyson
ABC's How to Get Away With Murder is adding an Oscar nominee and Emmy winner.
Cicely Tyson has booked a role on the network's hit freshman drama from showrunner Pete Nowalk and executive producer Shonda Rhimes, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Details of Tyson's role are — as has become the rule in Shondaland — being kept under wraps. But the actress, who earned an Academy Award nomination for 1972's Sounder and took home Emmy wins for Oldest Living Confederate Widow Tells All and The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman, will appear in one episode.
Also being kept close to the vest is the exact episode in which Tyson will appear. Murder, starring Golden Globe and SAG nominee Viola Davis, has six episodes remaining of its freshman run of 15, with Tyson expected to be in one around mid-February.
This will be Tyson's first visit to Shondaland. Her recent credits also include Emmy-nominated turns in Lifetime's The Trip to Bountiful, Hallmark's Relative Stranger and HBO's A Lesson Before Dying, as well as features The Help and Alex Cross.
Tyson becomes the latest high-profile guest star to join Murder. The series also will see Marcia Gay Harden recur as a foil for Davis' Annalise Keating.
Murder — and the rest of ABC's TGIT lineup — returns Jan. 29. Sound off in the comments section below with your guesses about whom Tyson is playing.
