Jennifer Lopez and NBC's relationship is expanding.

The actress, who stars on the network's cop drama Shades of Blue, is teaming with NBC for a dance competition series, it was announced Tuesday.

The network has ordered 10 episodes of World of Dance, an unscripted series in which the winner will receive $1 million.

In partnership with global dance brand World of Dance, the series brings the world’s elite dancers together to compete in epic battles of artistry, precision and athleticism. Solo dancers will compete against duos and crews in an unlimited range of dance, including hip-hop, krumping, popping, locking, tap, ballet, break dancing, ballroom, clogging, stomping and more.

Handpicked from qualifying events around the country and thousands of online submissions, competitors are divided into three divisions: junior (any size act under 16 years old), upper (groups of 1-4, over 16 years of age) and team (groups of five or more, over 16 years). After an initial audition round, divisions face off in duels until only one of each is left standing.

A panel of yet-to-be-named experts will score the acts using a precise point system developed by World of Dance, using the following criteria: routine, execution, presentation, and crowd appeal. The epic finale sees the winners from each division will compete for $1 million and the title of “Best in the World.”

Lopez will exec produce along with Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Benny Medina, Kris Curry, Matilda Zoltowski, David Gonzalez, Matthew Everitt and Al Hassas. Universal Television Alternative Studios will produce in association with Lopez's Nuyorican Productions banner.

"This will be a fierce talent-heavy dance competition that embraces the raw emotion and excitement that dance represents," Lopez said in a statement. "I am excited to work with World of Dance, an organization that has had an immeasurable impact on the dance community, to give all dancers an enormous platform where their dreams can be realized."

Added Universal Television Alternative Studios president Meredith Ahr: “Dance rivals any sport for its ability to produce world-class athletes and powerful performances that entertain, inspire and unite people from all walks of life. The unmatched credibility that the World of Dance organization has achieved so quickly speaks to the high standard they have set for their community, which is based on authentic expression, diversity and innovation. Those core values, paired with one of dance's greatest success stories and role models, Jennifer Lopez, are sure to give viewers a front row seat as dance is taken to the next level.”

In addition, Emmy-winning choreographers Napoleon and Tabitha D'umo, best known as Nappytabs, are also on board, after choreographing Lopez's new Las Vegas show, "All I Have."

World of Dance is one of two dancing competition shows in the works at NBC. Channing Tatum and Jenna Dewan-Tatum, who starred in the 2006 dance film Step Up, are exec producers on another as-yet-untitled unscripted dance series on which Dewan-Tatum will serve as a judge and mentor. That project is still in development after receiving a six-episode pickup in March.

It is unclear if Lopez will also have a role in front of the camera on World of Dance. The multihyphenate, who got her start as a dancer on Fox's In Living Color, served as a judge on Fox's American Idol for several seasons before the singing competition wrapped in May. Lopez's Shades of Blue is set to return for its sophomore season sometime midseason.

Unscripted continues to play an important role at NBC with the continued success of singing competition series The Voice, which will welcome new judges Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keys this fall. The network's unscripted slate also includes veteran series America Ninja Warrior, America's Got Talent, The Celebrity Apprentice and The Biggest Loser as well as newer entries such as Strong and Running Wild With Bear Grylls.
