The ABC host got choked up while discussing the death of 20 schoolchildren in Connecticut, saying, "I just want the people of Newtown to know we're not taking what you're going through lightly."

Jimmy Kimmel began his midnight show on Monday night with an earnest moment that addressed the families that lost loved ones in the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut on Friday.

"I think the president said what needed to be said last night on television, I think he said it beautifully," Kimmel, who quickly began to tear up, said at the beginning of his monologue. "I just want the people of Newtown to know we're not taking what you're going through lightly, and we are thinking of you a lot, all of us. My job is to give you a little break from being sad, and I'll do my best to do that."

Kimmel, still somber, cracked the kicker: "So do you want to see some Christmas lights shaped like a penis?"

He is one of many comedy hosts to begin his show with an acknowledgment of the tragedy. On Saturday, SNL began with a choir of children singing "Silent Night," while David Letterman discussed gun control and his own young child. Conan O'Brien gave a talk that was similar to Kimmel's, noting that it was his job to lighten the mood, for at least a little while.
