Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski Weigh in on George Zimmerman (Video)
The MSNBC "Morning Joe" co-hosts respond to the charges against the neighborhood watchman for the killing of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin.
When George Zimmerman was charged Wednesday night with second-degree murder in the shooting of Travyon Martin, six weeks after the the fact, Joe Scarborough asked why the decision arrived so late.
"I wonder why it took so long," the co-host of MSNBC's Morning Joe said at the party for THR's 35 Most Powerful People in Media. "Obviously you don't want to pre-judge anybody and you're innocent until proven guilty. But, that said, the police were guilty of being extraordinarily insensitive. Holding a young man for three days, not notifying the parents? (There were) a lot of things very shocking about it, regardless of whether Zimmerman's found guilty or not."
Chiming in, Mika Brzezinski --- Scarborough's other half on Morning Joe -- touched on the media frenzy that surrounded the death of Martin, the 17-year-old fatally shot by Zimmerman during a Feb. 26 confrontation in Sanford, Fla.
"I also think this is a case now that has received such scrutiny. The spotlight is on it, we need to let it play out," she said, reiterating: "We just need to let it play out now."
Following Martin's death, police took Zimmerman into custody but soon released him without charges. The murky facts of the case have been stiched together in the media, with dissections of 911 tapes, eyewitness accounts, hoodie controversies and analysis of grainy video footage dominating headlines.
Zimmerman invoked self-defense, claiming that Martin attacked him; he's expected in a Florida court on Thursday. The 28-year-old could face life in prison and is expected to enter a not guilty plea.
