John Travolta Set as Robert Shapiro in FX's 'American Crime Story: People v. O.J. Simpson'
FX anthology American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson has brought John Travolta back to the small screen.
In his first TV role since Welcome Back, Kotter, Travolta will star as Robert Shapiro, a key member of O.J. Simpson's "Dream Team" during the murder trial, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Travolta will also serve as a producer of the 10-part miniseries.
American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson — the first season of the anthology from Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk — is based on Jeffrey Toobin's best-selling book The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson. Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson are also producing.
The 10-episode first season examines the Simpson trial as told from the perspective of the lawyers and is poised to explore the chaotic behind-the-scenes dealings and maneuvering on both sides of the court. More significantly, it will display how a combination of prosecution confidence, defense wiliness and the LAPD's history with the city's African-American community gave a jury what it needed: reasonable doubt.
He joins a cast that includes Cuba Gooding Jr. as Simpson, American Horror Story favorite Sarah Paulson as prosecutor Marcia Clark and Friends alum David Schwimmer as Simpson's friend and attorney, Robert Kardashian.
Travolta will next be seen in The Forger and recently completed production on three feature films: Criminal Activities, In A Valley of Violence and Life On The Line. His credits include Saturday Night Fever, Grease, Urban Cowboy, Carrie, Blowout, Look Who’s Talking, Pulp Fiction, Michael, Phenomenon, A Civil Action, Broken Arrow, Face/Off, Primary Colors, Get Shorty, Swordfish, Wild Hogs, Hairspray and Savages. Travolta is repped by WME and Principato-Young.
