Jon Stewart on Donald Trump Moderating a GOP Presidential Debate: 'Thank You, Jesus!' (Video)
The news that Donald Trump is moderating a GOP presidential debate has made Jon Stewart ecstatic.
"Thank you Jesus! I'm so happy!" he said on Tuesday night's The Daily Show, biting his knuckle and showing exaggerated enthusiasm as a graphic featuring Trump's photo and the words "Da Best Debate Guy Ever" appeared onscreen. "You know sometimes when God closes a door, he opens a window. And sometimes standing outside that window is a circus peanut wearing a badger. Here's how you know it's gonna be great. Regular Republicans, the ones we used to hate, are downright scared."
He then played clips showing several prominent Republicans dissing Trump as a debate moderator, including Karl Rove, former senior adviser to President George W. Bush, who said it's going to be "one giant ego trip," and GOP presidential candidate Jon Huntsman saying, "I'm not gonna kiss his ring, and I'm not gonna kiss any other part of his anatomy."
In fact, only two GOP candidates have committed to taking part in the debate -- former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum -- with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former Utah Gov. Huntsman already declining to appear.
Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, who has yet to make an announcement about her participation in the debate, has expressed concerns about Trump's objectivity, saying "he said he's already learning towards a candidate."
Meanwhile, Stewart also showed his audience of Trump dissing some of the candidates.
"Trump can never ever ever let s---- slide," Stewart said.
Stewart then said that there was more to the story that really gave him such glee.
"Now if Trump had only announced he were going to be moderating a debate, that would have been enough to make my week, but he did let slip one other bit of good news," he said, before showing a clip in which Trump tells Today's Matt Lauer: "If the wrong candidate is nominated to run, I would certainly think about running as an independent."
Exclaimed Stewart: "Holy s---! This guy is moderating a debate. If the people in the debate he's moderating don't satisfy him, he's jumping in himself!"
Trump made headlines and became fodder for late-night hosts' jokes earlier this year when he suggested that President Barack Obama is foreign-born while saying that he might run for president himself. In May, he announced he would not be running, saying: "Business is my greatest passion, and I am not ready to leave the private sector."
The Dec. 27 debate is scheduled to air on Ion. Watch the Stewart on The Daily Show below:
