Julianne Nicholson is returning to the small screen.

The Black Mass star is set to topline the network's new crime thriller, Eyewitness, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Picked up straight to series in January, the drama is based on the Norwegian crime thriller Oyevitne and centers on two innocent teenage boys who secretly witness a shooting in the forest and barely escape with their lives. Desperate to keep their relationship a secret and in fear of being found by the shooter, they remain silent, but soon learn that what has been seen cannot be unseen and witnessing such a horrible event changes everything.

Nicholson will play Helen Torrance, a former big-city homicide detective who left her harrowing career to become a small-town sheriff and loving wife. However, a gruesome crime thrusts her back into the traumas of her past – just as she’s begun her hardest case yet: being a foster mother to a teenage boy.

Tyler Young (Empire) has joined the cast, playing Helen's foster son, Philip O’Brien. A sensitive yet tough teenager from the projects who has seen more pain than anyone ever should, Philip gets a chance to start over with his foster mother in an idyllic small town. There, he's on the verge of falling in love with a boy from school, Lukas, when they witness a quadruple murder. Philip becomes more troubled than ever as the two boys swear themselves to secrecy for fear of being outed.

The role brings Nicholson back to USA where she starred on Law & Order: Criminal Intent for three seasons. More recently, she recurred on Boardwalk Empire and Masters of Sex, and also starred in SundanceTV's The Red Road. Her film credits also include August: Osage County. She is repped by CAA and Davien Littlefield Management.

Young, whose credits include Chicago Fire, is repped by Gray Talent Group and Authentic Talent and Literary Management.

Shades of Blue creator Adi Hasak adapted the series for USA and will serve as executive producer and showrunner. Jarl Emsell Larsen and Scott Peters also will exec produce. Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight) will exec produce the pilot and direct the first two episodes of the series, which hails from Universal Cable Productions.
