'Key and Peele' Bosses Tapped as Showrunners on TV Land's Alison Brie Comedy
Ian Roberts and Jay Martel will oversee the cabler's Alison Brie-produced "Teachers."
Key and Peele showrunners Ian Roberts and Jay Martel are headed for TV Land.
The duo have signed on to serve as showrunners on the cable network's single-camera comedy pilot Teachers, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The web series-turned-pilot hails from Community's Alison Brie. Teachers revolves around six elementary school teachers who are trying to mold the minds and lives of America's youth but they don't really seem to have their own lives together at all. From making their class help them stalk exes online to altering grades, the teachers are changing the world one student at a time. TV Land will film Teachers as a single-camera comedy, marking its second in the works at the network behind upcoming series Jennifer Falls.
Brie is attached to executive produce, and stars Caitlin Barlow, Katy Colloton, Cate Freedman, Kate Lambert, Katie O'Brien and Katie Thomas have all signed on to reprise their roles from the web series. The Chicago six were trained at the iO Theater in Chicago and now perform together at iO West in L.A. as The Katydids. Matt Miller and Cap Gun TV will exec produce alongside Brie, TV Land president Larry W. Jones and Keith Cox. The Katydids and Miller created the web series.
In addition to showrunning the Peabody Award-winning Key and Peele, Roberts and Martel won a WGA Award for their work as head writers on Blake Shelton's Not So Family Christmas special for NBC. Their most recent screenplay, Get Hard, is in production with Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart starring. Roberts has a background in improv and is a founding member of the Upright Citizen's Brigade and has appeared on-screen in Parks and Recreation, Arrested Development and features I Love You, Man and Step Brothers. Martel wrote and directed the indie feature Terrorist and was a producer and head writer on Comedy Central's Strangers With Candy. He's a two-time Emmy nominee and a three-time WGA Award nominee.
Roberts and Martel are repped by Verve and Principato-Young.
