Discovery Orders Crime Docuseries From 'Sons of Anarchy' Boss
Kurt Sutter's six-part series "Outlaw Empires" will profile some of the most iconic outlaw groups in history, including the Crips, the Irish Mob and Italian Mafia.
Discovery Channel is getting into the Kurt Sutter business.
The cable network has ordered Outlaw Empires, a six-part docuseries from the outspoken creator of FX's biker drama Sons of Anarchy. It is set to premiere at 10 p.m. Monday, May 14.
Sutter will explore the some of the most feared and iconic gang and mob families in history, including the Crips, Irish Mob and Italian Mafia, the network said Tuesday.
"I’ve made a career writing about fictitious anti-heroes. To create these worlds, I’ve spent a lot of time with active members on both sides of the law," Sutter said in announcing the news. "And if I had to pick the most interesting of the two, the choice is obvious -- we all love the guys in black. This isn’t about making a judgment call on who’s good or bad. As a storyteller, I’m drawn to these personal, intimate accounts of why these men made the choices they made and what it’s like to be a member of an outlaw organization."
Sutter's Anarchy, which was renewed for a fifth season in October, is a valuable property for FX, ranking as basic cable's No. 1 scripted drama series among the key adults 18-49 demographic. Sutter recently inked his first overall deal -- a three-year pact -- with studio 20th Television and FX Productions to develop fare for both broadcast and cable.
Outlaw will be produced by Studio Lambert (Wife Swap) and Sutter's Sutterink shingle for Discovery. Watch a promo for Outlaw below.
