Niecy Nash on 'Leave It to Niecy': 'We Just Make Love, Money and Laughter' (Exclusive Video)
Niecy Nash isn’t hard up for work. The funny girl is starring in a new TV Land comedy with Cedric the Entertainer, Have Faith, she’s writing a new book about love and relationships, and her experimental “docu-sitcom,” Leave It to Niecy, premieres Sunday on the same cable network that aired her hit wedding special in June, TLC.
“So we had the wedding special and then after that, TLC was like ‘America loved you, we would like to keep the party going,’ ” Nash tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Honestly, our first reaction was, ‘Why? What?’ I mean, we thought it was over.”
“Mission accomplished,” chimes in Nash’s husband, Jay Tucker.
“Right, mission accomplished and we were done with it,” she continues. “But they were like, 'Your family is so special,’ and we had never even thought about bringing our lives and opening up the door, but it was very important to us that they understand, we're not sensational. We just make love, money and laughter.”
Leave It to Niecy features Nash and Tucker’s blended family with her three children -- Dominic, Donielle, and Dia -- and his son, Romallis, from their previous relationships, as well as her mother, Miss Margaret. And the couple insisted that they wouldn’t fake anything for the camera.
“Here's what's really going on in my life,” Nash describes the series’ shooting process. “Here's something that I'm going to do. Maybe, I'll delay it and wait for you to catch up, or maybe I'm going to go and you tell me if you're coming. But, what I would do is present an open slate and say, ‘This is my life, this is what the kids got going, this is what my husband's got going, this is what I've got going. You’re welcome to shoot this.’ ”
It picks up several months after their May wedding as she and Tucker are still settling into their home together and trying to redefine their family life with him in it. Nash is in the process of auditioning for the TV Land series and writing her book. And as for Tucker, he’s just trying to be a good husband.
“Part of it is was just supporting my wife,” he says. “And letting everybody know what we're trying to do and just sharing. We think we've got a great thing going. We feel we’ve got a strong foundation. We want to let the world in on something good.”
“I didn't marry a man that wanted to be in the business,” Niecy adds. “But that's why we’re a perfect fit. He just comes along and supports my hijinks, but he's not trying to be, ‘You got a script with my name on it?’ No, there is none of that.”
Leave It to Niecy premieres Sunday at 10 p.m. on TLC
