Lifetime is already planning to adapt the sequel to Flowers in the Attic, one week before the telepic will make its television debut Jan. 18.

The news was revealed Thursday afternoon by Rob Sharenow, executive vp and general manager of Lifetime during the winter Television Critics Association press tour. The controversial best-selling 1979 novel by V.C. Andrews, Flowers in the Attic, has sold 40 million copies worldwide and was followed by Petals on the Wind, published in 1980.

Flowers in the Attic tells the tale of four Dollganger siblings who, after the sudden death of their father, are convinced by their mother to stay hidden in the attic of their wealthy grandparents' mansion so she can reclaim the family fortune. Her visits start to diminish when she gets involved with a new lover, and the oldest children look to each other for comfort. Heather Graham, Ellen Burstyn, Kiernan Shipka, Mason Dye and Dylan Bruce star.

Screenwriter Kayla Alpert has already begun scripting the sequel, revealing that the story takes place about 10 years after the events of Flowers in the Attic. "It is a very, juicy compelling revenge drama," Alpert promised during the session.

The  1980 novel Petals on the Wind covers five years and is a continuation of the first Dollganger novel.

When asked about the possibility of adapting the other follow-up novels in the Dollganger series, There Be Thorns, Seeds of Yesterday and Garden of Shadows, Alpert put the ball in Lifetime's court, saying that it is up to the network.

The first adaptation of Flowers in the Attic, directed by Jeffrey Bloom and starring Louise Fletcher, Victoria Tennant and Kristy Swanson, made about $15.2 million at the U.S. box office.
