'Magic Mike' Star Channing Tatum Shows Off Stripper Dance Moves on 'Today' (Video)

Magic Mike, the upcoming male stripper movie based loosely on Channing Tatum’s life, has already been getting plenty of buzz in the days leading up to its release, but having Tatum dance on The Today Show can’t hurt.

The 32-year-old actor appeared on the show Wednesday morning surrounded by dancers who performed a flash-mob strip show. Channing showed off some dance moves, but kept his clothing on for the show.

He’ll be showing plenty of skin in Steven Soderbergh’s film, which opens in theaters on June 29 and also stars Joe Manganiello, Matthew McConaughey and Alex Pettyfer.

The film is based on Channing’s own experiences in Miami as an 18-year-old stripper.

“It was a crazy time in my life," Channing told Al Roker and Ann Curry on the show. "I'm not ashamed of it, but I don't know if I'm not proud of it. It was definitely a crazy part of my life, and I survived it."

The Warner Bros. film follows Vegas stripper Magic Mike (Tatum) who takes a novice stripper (Pettyfer) under his wing to teach him the ways of the world at a club owned by the former stripper Dallas (McConaughey).

Earlier in the year, Tatum told The Hollywood Reporter that out of all the films he had coming out in 2012 (including The Vow, 21 Jump Street and G.I. Joe: Retaliation), Magic Mike means the most to him.

“We really want it to be good,” he said. “I know it's getting a lot of press and a lot of hype and it's scary when that happens because you just want people to like it, or to understand it.”

Tatum is also a producer on the film, and he worked with Reid Carolin on the screenplay. Tatum told THR that he and Carolin only had a very small window of time to get the script to Soderbergh, and so they wrote the script in about a month. “It's not all my life, but it's definitely all my experiences,” said Tatum.

“I basically poured all my memories and stories out,” he said. “We just kind of wrote something entirely unique to itself.”
