'Man Up!' Creator Christopher Moynihan Credits Sitcom Trend to Generation of Lost Men

The creator and star calls his new ABC comedy a "reflection of society."

With the Oct. 18 launch of ABC's Man Up!, another sitcom falls in line with the season's most notable trend: men having problems being men.

Creator and star Christopher Moynihan says the reason is simple. "It's a reflection of society," Moynihan tells the Hollywood Reporter. "There's a plethora of that going on."

Co-star Amanda Detmer is a bit more colorful in her assessment. "[It's] because there are so many dudes who can't get their shit together," she says.

"There are real, real men," Moynihan adds, acknowledging its not a rule of modern society that males feel sidelined. "You're just not going to see those types of men on our show. There'll be men like us, who play Call of Duty on Playstation and drink non-dairy hazelnut creamer."

It's those clichés that seem to be responsible for some of the negative response. The Hollywood Reporter's own Tim Goodman praised the cast but questioned the limited appeal, asking "How long can they play this joke?"

For his part, Moynihan agrees the premise shouldn't define the series, promising that there won't be a "Man Up" moment in every episode.

"We're just kind of setting it up in the pilot," says Moynihan. "It was the perfect opportunity to see that these guys are not what there fathers were before them, but they have opportunities to do it. The show is essentially the adventures of these four guys and the girls being there to kind of launch the stories with us."

Perhaps the series' most comparable contemporary, Last Man Standing, is also its lead-in. The comedy, which follows Tim Allen and his lone Y chromosome in a house dominated by women, debuted to an audience of 13 million viewers, earning a 3.5 rating in the adults 18-49 demographic.

Moynihan seems confident the similar tone will help Man Up! find its audience early in the game. "Tim Allen is an icon," he says. "It feels like a great place to launch."
