Marti Noxon's 'Un-Real' Gets Series Order at Lifetime
The Shiri Appleby starrer marks A+E Studios' first wholly owned series.
Lifetime has picked up Marti Noxon's scripted drama Un-Real to series, marking A+E Studios' first wholly owned series.
The 10-episode drama goes behind the scenes of a hit competition dating series to follow the experiences of a young staffer (Life Unexpected's Appleby) whose lone job is to manipulate the relationships with (and among) the contestants in order to get the vital dramatic and outrageous footage producers demand.
Noxon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Mad Men) and Sarah Gertrude Shapiro penned the pilot, which is based on the latter's short, Sequin Raze. Noxon will exec produce, with Shapiro producing. Sally DeSipio and Bill Davenport will EP for Wieden+Kennedy Entertainment. Roger Kumble directed the pilot.
"Un-Real is unlike anything that exists on television today,” Lifetime exec vp and GM Rob Sharenow said. “It’s premium and original on every level, and we’re thrilled that Marti Noxon and Sarah Gertrude Shapiro’s unique series will be Lifetime’s first program produced by A+E Studios.”
Megyn Price, Freddie Stroma, Josh Kelly, Nathalie Kelley, Johanna Braddy, Breeda Wool and Ashley Scott co-star; Arielle Kebbell guest stars.
Un-Real was one of two pilots Noxon had in the works; the Buffy grad also has an adaptation of The Girlfriend's Guide to Divorce in the works at Bravo after Showtime passed on the project. Lisa Edelstein, Paul Adelstein and Janeane Garofalo star.
For Lifetime, Un-Real joins a scripted slate that includes Marc Cherry's Devious Maids, Drop Dead Diva and Witches of East End. On the pilot side, the female-skewing cable network is prepping drama The Lottery and Nicholas Sparks' Deliverance Creek, which is airing as a two-hour back-door pilot. The network passed on Alicia Silverstone drama pilot HR, which was directed by Sex and the City's Darren Star.
A premiere date for Un-Real has not yet been determined.
