Medical Marijuana Show Premieres on Discovery Channel This Fall
"Weed Wars" profiles the challenges of running a medicinal cannabis dispensary in California.
There have been plenty of shows profiling the challenges of starting and maintaining a business. But in a new twist, Discover Channel’s Weed Wars will follow an industry that has only recently come into existence—the controversial medicinal cannabis business.
In 1998, California voters passed the Compassionate Use Act, which legalized medicinal cannabis and created a new kind of entrepreneur.
Weed Wars will step inside Oakland’s Harborside Health Center, the nation’s largest medicinal cannabis dispensary with more than 80,000 patients. The founder and executive director, Steve DeAngelo [pictured], is determined to provide quality product to customers while also setting an example to the rest of the country about the full regulation and taxation of medicinal cannabis.
“Weed Wars fearlessly pulls back the curtain on a once illegal and still controversial world.,” said Nancy Daniels, executive vice president of production and development for Discovery Channel. “From the inner workings of the business to Steve’s distinctive leadership style, Weed Wars is a fascinating glimpse into this highly unique setting,”
Produced by Braverman Productions, Weed Wars will also introduce viewers to the process of cultivating the plant, from seed germination to harvesting. Viewers will also meet the growers and “patient farmers” whose job it is to provide the “medicine” – the buds – that will eventually be used by thousands of clients.
