UPDATED: The three-hour TV kudos will air Aug. 25, shifting to a much earlier date to avoid interfering with football.

NBC has moved the Emmys to Monday. In an effort to avoid conflicting with the NFL, the annual TV kudos will air a month earlier than usual, on Monday, Aug. 25, instead of the usual Sunday time slot.

The 66th annual Emmy Awards will air live on both coasts, at 8 p.m. ET and 5 p.m. PT. NBC announced the news jointly with the Television Academy and did not say anything about a host at the time.

The Emmys' shift also means an earlier date for the Creative Arts Emmys. Those will be held Saturday, Aug. 16.

Moving the Emmys to August was a decision first made last year. NBC, which airs TV ratings juggernaut Sunday Night Football, wanted to avoid a conflict with football -- much as it did with the 2006 and 2010 Emmys. Every other Emmys ceremony since 2002, broadcast on Fox, ABC and CBS, has aired in September.

And while NBC's August move comes as no surprise, the Monday move is a first for some time. The Emmys have traditionally aired on Sunday right before the kickoff of the fall TV season since the 1980s.

The first Emmys, held in January 1949 and broadcast only on the radio, were held on a Tuesday. The Emmys were last held on a Monday in 1976.
