NBC's 'The Wall' Scores 20-Episode Pickup

The LeBron James-produced and Chris Hardwick-hosted series is the second to launch under Universal Television's new Alternative Studio.

NBC is climbing The Wall with excitement.

The network announced Wednesday at the Television Critics Association's winter press tour that it has extended the episode order for the LeBron Janes-produced game show by 20 episodes. The pickup brings its total episode count to 30.

Hosted by Chris Hardwick (Comedy Central's @midnight, AMC's Talking Dead), The Wall marks the second show to launch under Meredith Ahr's and Paul Telegdy's newly formed Universal Television Alternative Studio.

The series, produced by James and Maverick Carter's SpringHill Entertainment banner as well as Glassman Media, has performed well out of the gate. Thus far, it has averaged a 1.7 rating among adults 18-49 and 6.9 million total viewers (sans DVR returns) after launching to strong sampling following an America's Got Talent holiday special.

Every time a player releases a green or red ball, the tension is palpable because each drop can affect the contestant's life in the most extraordinary way and that makes for great television.”

Added Telegdy, president of alternative and reality: "A big event, family-friendly game show that can open a night is a wonderful asset joining NBC’s powerhouse reality brands such as The Voice, America’s Got Talent, American Ninja Warrior and Little Big Shots. Chris Hardwick is masterful as he conducts this high-stakes roller coaster, and the dramatic ride of the contestants ends with a thrilling decision that pays off differently every time and increases viewership significantly across the hour."

The Wall joins Better Late Than Never as shows launched under Universal Television's Alternative Studio. The series has also proved a solid format internationally, with France's TF1 handing out 40 episodes of its local version.

The Wall is produced by SpringHill Entertainment and Glassman Media with James, Hardwick, Carter and Andrew Glassman serving as executive producers. It was developed by Glassman Media in conjunction with CORE Media and produced in association with Universal Television Alternative Studio.

Game shows continue to see a resurgence of late, with NBC also finding success with its Ellen DeGeneres-produced talent competition Little Big Shots and ABC scoring ratings gold with its block of retro games.
