Netflix to Skip January TCA Press Tour

The streaming giant's participation is said to be on a per-tour basis.

January's semi-annual Television Critics Association press tour will be without the industry's biggest disruptor: Netflix.

The streaming giant has opted to skip the upcoming tour, set for Jan. 5-18 in Pasadena, the TCA announced Friday.

Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Netflix never planned on participating in every tour and simply planned to skip the January tour stop. The TCA had planned to schedule Netflix for a day of presentations during the tour. This will be the first tour that Netflix has sat out since its first appearance in January 2013. 

To be sure, many networks have voiced concerns about the rising costs and questionable value of TCA — as well as the impact on shows that take the time away from production. What was initially conceived as a way for press to have access to executives, producers and talent for both new and returning shows has evolved given the 24/7 news cycle and digital era. Gone are the days when talent was inaccessible and rarely did press. Instead, comments from the stage can often go viral before a panel ends given the prolific use of social media during the tour. The latter can make or break shows (and executives).

Last summer, Netflix held nine individual press conferences for shows including The Get Down, Stranger Things, Luke Cage and The Crown, as well as an executive session in which content chief Ted Sarandos said the streaming giant would continue its spending momentum with more than $6 billion on originals.
