Oprah's Disappointing Favorite Things Giveaway Mocked Online

When two of the biggest movie stars appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show to give away some of their “favorite things,” the expectations are higher than usual.

So when Julia Roberts and Tom Hanks went on Oprah Winfrey’s daytime talker on Friday to share some of the items they could not live without, it wasn’t exactly up to par with a car or a trip.

Roberts, who co-stars with Hanks in the upcoming Larry Crowne, prefaced it by saying this, “There’s no car. There’s no trip. No one’s coming home with Tom,” before revealing some makeup, an herb rub, a workout tape and a tote bag. “But if Tom gives everybody a car right now, I’ll be so mad,” Roberts said afterwards with a laugh.

Hanks followed, but Roberts didn’t have anything to worry about since he didn’t give away any free cars. Whew. Instead, the star revealed an espresso maker.

Yahoo!'s Daytime in No Time mocked the giveaway, with the host saying the pair's favorite things "must have been hidden behind other, more favoriter things?" Saying later: "Hm, makeup, herb rub and a makeup tape? [Roberts] must be saving the best for last" (which she wasn't). Daytime in No Time made a note of Roberts' net worth (as of 2008): a whopping $140 million. So what gives?

A disgruntled viewer tweeted Friday afternoon about the items Roberts gave away: “Julia Roberts is such a cheap-ass. I can’t believe the crap she gave away on Oprah.”

A Twitter user even questioned if Real Housewives of New York City’s Jill Zarin was indeed in the studio audience, providing some amusing commentary.

The duo ended up giving away Theodora & Callum scarves, Melinda Maria bangles, Lancôme's Définicils Precious Cells mascara and Juicy Tubes lip gloss set, Coach Julia nylon cosmetic case, Serge Normant dry shampoo, Zuma Organic Bonnie’s tasty herb rub, Kathy Kaehler’s fitness DVD, Sea-thos Foundation tote bag and Nespresso CitiZ & Milk espresso maker.

When two of the highest-paid movie stars are on stage, surely they could part with a little more than just a coffeemaker.

Remember, last year’s Oprah’s Ultimate Favorite Things aired two editions, one on Nov. 19, 2010, when a roundtrip flight on United Airlines and a cruise were handed out, and the second on Nov. 22, 2010, in which a 2012 Volkswagen Beetle was given away.
