'OITNB' Season 4 Trailer Reveals Next-Level Trouble Ahead for Piper and the Inmates
The ladies of Litchfield are back — and the orange-clad women are seeing red.
Netflix has unveiled the official trailer for Orange Is the New Black's upcoming fourth season, and the two-minute-plus look signals dark times ahead inside the prison walls.
"I've been in Litchfield for a while now, and I've started to feel unsafe lately," says Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling). "I think I pissed off the prison."
When we last visited with Piper and the gang, the inmates weren't just happy, they were downright joyous after breaking out of the prison in one of the series' most uplifting scenes to date. But as they frolicked together in the nearby lake during a moment of freedom, two busloads of new women were being led into Litchfield.
In the trailer, Caputo (Nick Sandow) reveals that 100 new inmates have taken up beds, sure to prey on the warden's fears of overcrowding, and unfamiliar guards, two in particular who seem to have it out for the women, have joined the ranks.
Missing from view is Alex Vause (Laura Prepon), who, in last season's cliff-hanger moment, was readying a fight for her life with Aydin, the henchman of drug kingpin Kubra, in the prison greenhouse. But her voice can be heard at the 0:55 mark, asking Red (Kate Mulgrew), "Can you keep a secret?" In a brief tease to Alex's storyline, Lolly (Lori Petty) is then shown sneaking over to the greenhouse — a sign that Alex is the one who emerged victorious in the showdown and that Lolly is helping her to cover up the mess. (Earlier sneak-peek photos of the Jenji Kohan-created series showed Alex is still on the prison grounds.)
Piper, who seemed to be entering full-on power-trip mode after pushing Alex away and betraying new love interest Stella (Ruby Rose) last season, is now shown warring with Maria Ruiz (Jessica Pimentel), who tells the former Dandelion, "I am going to bury you."
Elsewhere of note, Laverne Cox's Sophia is still in SHU, Morello (Yael Stone) — now Mrs. Lorna Muccio — doesn't seem to be enjoying newlywed bliss and last season's budding romance between Soso (Kimiko Glenn) and Poussey (Samira Wiley) appears to be taking off. Natasha Lyonne's Nicky and Matt McGorry's Bennett are completely missing-in-action — neither character has been seen since the beginning episodes of last season.
But it's Pennsatucky (Taryn Manning) who seems to be speaking for them all when she tells Boo (Lea DeLaria) that "pain's always there, but suffering is a choice. I'm really tired of walking around like a dog." After the minutes of tension and build-up between the inmates and all of the changes they are now faced with inside the prison, the final moments blaring the sound of the lockdown alarm beg the question: Will there be a revolt?
The peek does include a light moment, when Taystee (Danielle Brooks) fumbles with the phone while answering calls in Caputo's office. Otherwise, the season-four forecast is clear: It's going to be dark and stormy.
