'Pretty Little Liars' Recap: Did We Just Find Out Who 'A' Is?

Season 2, Episode 12: The midseason finale proved ‘A’ to be the Liars' “ultimate frenemy” and revealed Garret and Jenna’s true colors.

The midseason finale, “Over My Dead Body” was a nonstop, creepy and action-packed ride that sent the girls in a race against time to save Dr. Sullivan’s (Annabeth Gish) life.

Or at least that’s what they and the audience thought.

Instead the girls were set up by “A” and caught by the police digging with the very same shovel that killed Allison. Guess we now know why “A” bought those Tory Burch boots back in the tag of this season’s sixth episode. Through a series of flashbacks we learn how the girls end up in the police station with newly reinstated Detective Wilden (Bryce Johnson).

“A” was in top form in the finale and presented each of the girls with a task in order to learn where their confidante was. In a box labeled “Open or she dies” were 3 creepy dolls, one for each Liar save Emily (Shay Mitchell). Each task would give the girls what they really wanted but with consequences they may not be ready for.

In the “brilliant” plan their “ultimate frenemy” hatched, Aria (Lucy Hale) was instructed to get rid of Jackie (Paloma Guzman). How exactly would she do this? Well it seems Ezra’s (Ian Harding) ex has plagiarized her soon to be published paper on painter Theodore Gericault from a French essay. Reluctantly, Aria lets Jackie know that she is aware of her secret and tells her that she should leave Hollis. However, Jackie isn’t going down without a fight and she wants Ezra back hard. She shows up at the Montgomery house warning Aria that any word on her paper to anyone and she will spill about her affair with Ezra and it will ruin his career.

Perhaps an even more damaging task, Hanna (Ashley Benson) was directed to stop her father’s wedding to Isabelle. It was devastating watching her talk to her dad about his happiness knowing she’d have to take it away from him. In the middle of the ceremony, she tells Isabelle they need to talk and informs the bride to be of her father’s indiscretions with her mom while he was home in Rosewood sending Isabelle away from her fiancé.

Spencer (Troian Bellisario) is told that she needs to keep Toby (Keegan Allen) safe. Prior to getting this message, the brake line on his truck had been slashed. Worried, she realizes the only way to keep him safe is to keep him away from her. So, she tells him that she lied to him earlier about what her Dad said and as they are arguing, tells him he deserves someone who will be honest with him and runs away.  Wren (Julian Morris) sees her crying, consoles her and later kisses her. Toby is seen in the police station shouting, “I love you” to Spencer.

Emily’s doll is eerily found in the backseat of her car as she is driving to Tom (Roark Critchlow) and Isabelle’s wedding. When her GPS is malfunctioning on the way to the church she looks back and sees the doll, which tells her “I’m taking you to her. Go alone.” Following “A’s” directions, Emily ends up locked in a barn with a running car. Just as we think she is going to succumb to carbon monoxide poisoning she is pulled out. Unsure if it’s a dream, she sees Allison (Sasha Pieterse) who tells her “that bitch thinks this is what you really want…to be completely free of  ‘A.’” Though Allison says she knows who A is she can’t tell her because as we know “two can only keep a secret if one of them is dead.”

Jason DiLaurentis (Drew Van Acker) also shows up at the police station to support the girls and has a run in with Peter Hastings (Nolan North). The mystery of what the DiLaurentis family has on the Hastings grew even more mysterious when we learn that Peter did more than change the will to protect Jason and that Jason had ulterior motives for buying his house knowing what he would find there. He mentions that Ali was great at keeping secrets but she was also great at punishing people with the truth. All the while Garret (Yani Gellman) is looking on.

Clues as to who “A” is and possibly who killed Ali are revealed when Garret tells Jenna (Tammin Sursok) they “couldn’t have come up with a better plan.” Jenna is elated to know what the girls are going through and says she is only “sorry that they don’t know that we’re doing this to them.” We also learn that Garret and Jenna were the ones who wrote the note Jason found the morning after Ali died. With her mention of giving up his career in law enforcement, Garret hands Jenna page 5 of the autopsy report and tells her to burn it so that there “is nothing left to link us to that night.”

So what do YOU think? Are Garret and Jenna the team that makes up “A”? Or is it someone else? Did they kill Allison? How are they involved? What about the N.A.T. club?

Some additional thoughts/observations:

  • How much were you wishing for Ezra to tell Ella (Holly Marie Combs) that he was in love with Aria not Spencer at the police station?
  • The waitress in the tag says “How are you doing pretty eyes?” to “A” after he or she meets and gives a file to Dr. Sullivan. Is this a clue?

Quote of the week:

  • “Is there a creepier word for creepy?” – Hanna re: the creepiest dolls ever
  • “That is a very pretty dress…but you should know it gives you back fat.” – Caleb to Kate

The Hollywood Reporter recently caught up with executive producer Marlene King on how this finale would impact the girls and what’s to come in Rosewood. She also told THR about a new cast member with a "significant role" in the next half of the season

Pretty Little Liars' special Halloween episode will air Oct. 19 at 8pm on ABC Family. The second half of season 2 begins in January.
