'RuPaul's Drag Race' Moves to VH1 From Logo

The shift comes after the restructuring of Viacom's cable properties, including VH1 and Logo.

RuPaul's Drag Race is making a big change.

The reality competition will move from Logo to VH1 for its upcoming ninth season.

Encore episodes from season nine, which kicks off March 24, will be available on Logo. The upcoming season includes an appearance by Lady Gaga, among other guest judges.

"Coming off RuPaul’s Emmy win and a ratings record-breaking season of All Stars, the fandom around RuPaul’s Drag Race has only continued to swell as we head into season nine,” Logo senior vp original programming and development Pamela Post said. “Broadcasting the show on VH1 will allow more fans to experience the energy, heart and talent these fierce Queens bring to the stage every week.” 

The shift between the two Viacom-owned cablers comes after the series ran for eight years and more than 100 episodes on Logo. 

The decision will no doubt help RuPaul's Drag Race reach a broader episode, given VH1's success of late. VH1 topper Chris McCarthy was recently put in charge of the struggling MTV as well. However, the move puts the future of Logo into question given that Drag Race is arguably the show's most well-known series.

The change is also not surprising given the massive revamp under way for Viacom's cable properties. As first reported by THR, Spike TV is set to shutter and become the Paramount Network as part of an effort to more deeply integrate Viacom with the Paramount Pictures brand. Viacom is also refocusing on six core brands, which includes MTV, Nickelodeon and BET, among others, but not VH1 or Logo.

In addition to exec producers RuPaul Charles, Fenton Bailey, Randy Barbato, Tom Campbell, Steven Corfe and Mandy Salangsang, Tim Palazzola continues to serve as exec producer for Logo.

VH1 also announce the RuPaul's Drag Race move in a new season nine trailer released Wednesday.
