Ryan Phillippe to Star in ABC Drama Series 'Secrets & Lies'
He'll star in the drama about a father who becomes the prime suspect in the death of a young child.
Two years after his recurring role on FX's Damages, Ryan Phillippe is returning to TV full-time.
The actor is in final negotiations to star in ABC's 10-episode drama Secrets & Lies, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
Based on an upcoming Australian series starring Martin Henderson, the drama centers on a patriarch who becomes the prime suspect in the murder of a young boy when he finds the body.
Phillippe will play Ben Garner, a decent family man who works as a house painter, who is the father of 16-year-old Natalie and 12-year-old Abby and is experiencing marital problems with his wife, Christy. Ben is shocked and upset when he stumbles across the dead body of his 4-year-old neighbor Tom while on his morning run, and now must juggle the media and police attention in addition to his personal worries. He ultimately becomes the prime suspect in Tom's slaying.
The American adaptation, which hails from ABC Studios and Aaron Kaplan's Kapital Entertainment, also will be produced by Australia-based Hoodlum. Barbie Kligman (Private Practice, The Vampire Diaries, CSI: NY) is on board to write, executive produce and serve as a showrunner on the drama alongside Tracey Robertson and Nathan Mayfield. Charles McDougall is on board to direct the pilot, which will film in Wilmington, N.C.
For Phillippe, the role marks his latest foray into TV. It comes two years after he was set to star in CBS' drama pilot Golden Boy but ultimately pulled out from the project. His credits include Flags of Our Fathers, Crash, Cruel Intentions and The Lincoln Lawyer. Phillippe is repped by WME, the Schiff Co. and Sloane Offer.
