ABC's Scandal is going to shed some light on Abby's backstory.

Battlestar Galactica favorite Michael Trucco has been cast to play the ex-husband of Darby Stanchfield's White House press secretary, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

Trucco will play Charles Putney, the youngest son of former Virginia governor James Putney — and the man she divorced after he physically assaulted her in a drunken rage.

Details about the character's formal introduction are being kept under wraps. Charles has been referenced before but has not appeared until now. Trucco will appear in one episode — for now — with an airdate yet to be determined.

Diehard Gladiators will recall from season one that Abby was married to Charles for four years in a politically arranged marriage. She left him after he fractured three of her ribs, broke her jaw and threw her out into the snow. Olivia (Kerry Washington) took her in and hired her a great divorce attorney — but only after she clubbed him in the knee with a tire iron. It's for this reason that Abby has been (until recently, at least) loyal — sometimes to a fault — to Olivia.

For Trucco, the casting brings the actor back to the ABC fold where he most recently starred on the network's short-lived Killer Women adaptation. His other TV credits include Criminal Minds, Intelligence, Revenge, How I Met Your Mother and Fairly Legal. He's repped by UTA and McKeon-Myones.

Trucco joins a season-four cast list that also includes the returns of Paul Adelstein's Leo and Jasika Nicole's Kim, among others.

Scandal airs Thursdays at 9 p.m. on ABC. Hit the comments below with your theories on how Abby's ex will enter the picture.
