Sundance Channel Renews 'The Returned' for Season 2
The critically acclaimed French series will air new episodes later this year.
Sundance Channel is bringing back French supernatural drama The Returned.
The AMC Networks-owned cabler has acquired U.S. broadcast rights for the eight-episode sophomore season from Zodiak Rights. The new season of the critically acclaimed The Returned, currently in the works, will air in late 2014.
“Sundance Channel is becoming a go-to network for quality scripted television that's a little bit different to what's airing elsewhere. And The Returned has proven to be an incredible addition to our slate," said Sarah Barnett, president and GM at Sundance Channel. "We were delighted with the overwhelming critical and fan response to the series, and we expect that season two will continue to seduce and chill audiences."
The Returned is set in a French mountain town, where a seemingly random collection of people find themselves in a state of confusion as they attempt to return to their homes after dying years earlier. Last September, A&E and Bates Motel executive producer Carlton Cuse teamed up to adapt a U.S. version.
The Returned continues Sundance Channel's commitment to original scripted programming, which includes critical favorites Top of the Lake and Rectify, the latter of which returns later this year. Sundance Channel will roll out The Red Road on Feb. 27 and miniseries The Honorable Woman with Maggie Gyllenhaal.
Additionally, Sundance Channel has renewed The Writers' Room, with the second season going into the rooms of House of Cards, Sons of Anarchy, Pretty Little Liars, Scandal, The Good Wife and an episode highlighting comic-book adaptations on TV.
